To foster cross-regional knowledge sharing and the exchange of best practices, the Architects Association of Macau
(AAM) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) organized a joint online seminar “Green Buildings - Macao’s and Hong Kong’s Perspectives”. During the event, speakers shared the key characteristics of the green building markets in both regions, as well as the challenges faced by the industry. The speakers include Dr. Raymond LAU from Hong Kong, Professor ZHENG Jianyi, and Architect WU Kim Kam from Macao. For the Hong Kong side, Dr. LAU began by introducing the general state of the construction, then the gross floor area (GFA) concession incentive and mandatory green building requirements in land auctions introduce and voluntary rating tools and other drivers. And last described a basket of latest green technologies such as modular integrated construction (MiC) and building information modelling (BIM), and finish with an overview of challenges faced by the industry. As for Macao Arch. WU introduced the current situation, strategies and guidelines for sustainable development in Macao, as well as an introduction to the green labels and related assessment projects adopted. Professor ZHENG shared a case - Energy consumption analysis and sustainable development of high-density campus buildings of MUST. Through analysis the basic characteristics, energy consumption status and green building renovation of MUST campus buildings, attempted to analyze its causes and provide sustainable improvement suggestions.

“Architecture Continual Professional Development Course - Part III : Architectural Design and Regulation” continued to be jointly compiled and conducted by Arch. LAI Kun Fong, AAM BD Vice-President; and Arch. CHEUNG Hau Kuen, AAM Board Director. As urban development in Macao and the surrounding Greater Bay Area continues to advance, the construction industry, as a core driver of city building, is facing significant challenges in meeting the demand for skilled professionals. In response to this trend, the Architects Association of Macau staying true to its mission of nurturing local architectural talent, has launched specialized training programs tailored for these professionals. These programs aim to cultivate more skilled, innovative, and globally-minded elites in the construction industry, supporting sustainable growth. To reinforce and enhance the participants’ knowledge, the third part of the program mainly adopted the workshop format to allow students to deepen their understanding of the preparation of building plans (drafts). In the course, simulated plots were used as case analysis to allow students to further improve their understanding of relevant laws and regulations in the process, and to strengthen students’ practical practice on hand-drawn plans.

The “2024 Macao Community Construction Forum” sponsored by the Fundo de Desenvolvimento da Cultura and organized by the Architects Association of Macau and the Macao Community Construction Promotion Association, in collaboration with the University of Macau, brought together renowned urban planners and architects from cross-strait and four places , including HUANG Zi, Director of the Academic Committee, Key Scientific Research Base of the National Cultural Heritage Administration; CHIU Ju-hua, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Historical Resources Management Association (a corporate body); Professor WANG Weijen, Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong; Professor LAM Soi Hoi, Visiting Professor of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Macau, to share their experiences in preserving and revitalizing historic districts in various cities. Through the sharing of successful case studies by experts and scholars, the forum aimed to explore strategies for the preservation and revitalization of Macao’s old urban areas. The event sought to gather insights and ideas for rejuvenating Macao’s historic neighborhoods and fostering community development, contributing to the city’s vision of becoming a world-class tourism and leisure hub that is both livable and inviting for visitors.

Adhering to our mission, the Architects Association of Macao has been committed to promoting the overall professional service level of the Macao construction industry by providing rich and diverse learning opportunities for continual professional development courses to members and the industry. In response to the additions and changes made to relevant construction regulations in Macao in recent years, such as the newly formulation of the “Legal regime for urban construction” and “Technical Regulation on Fire Safety of Buildings and Sites “, etc., AAM has organized a CPD titled “Architecture Continual Professional Development Course - Architectural Design and Regulations” for the first time in 2024.
The course is jointly compiled and taught by Ar. Manuel LAI, AAM BD Vice-President; and Ar. Mimi CHEUNG, AAM Board Member. Both of them have been engaged in architectural design work for many years, are familiar with Macao laws, and have extensive experience in preparing projects of architecture in Macao. The course content deepens students’ understanding and application ability of building regulations through multiple case studies, practical examples and interactive discussions. During the design process, relevant regulations and laws are followed to ensure compliance of the building design, facilitating smooth approval of projects.
At the opening ceremony on May 4, AAM GA President Ar. Ben LEONG and BD President Ar. Christine CHOI respectively delivered welcome speeches, and Ar. Ben LEONG presented certificates of thanks to the two speakers and the supporting organization, Macao University of Science and Technology (represented by Associate Professor ZHENG Jian Yi of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts).
This is a series of courses, consisting of three parts totaling approximately 24 hours. The Part I has been conducted in May and June, the Part II starts on August 31, and the Part III is planned to be launched in October 2024. The first two parts of the course have attracted more than 40 participants to enroll. Depending on the effectiveness and response of this course, AAM will offer relevant courses again at an appropriate time in the future.

AAM organized the Webinar “Sustainable Architectural Finishes for Retrofitting Applications”, inviting Application Engineering Specialist Mr. Turis LI and Sales Manager Mr. Ted LEUNG from 3M Hong Kong Limited to be the speakers. The Webinar included two topics. Topic (1): Smart Solution for Energy Saving & Sustainability Proposition – 3M Sun Control Window Film. As one of the passive technologies to reduce energy consumption, the newest constructions and features of different types of sun control window films were illustrated. Topic (2): 3M Solutions in a Development or Renovation Project for Community Wellbeing and Be a Good Neighbor, introduced application examples of various film products for interior and exterior decoration, environmental sustainability, bird friendliness, minimizing damage from typhoon, etc.

INHABIT is a unique, multi-disciplinary team of professionals, a collective of experienced architects, designers, engineers and consultants. By integrating various professional fields, seamless interdisciplinary synergies are achieved to create buildings that are more relevant to the present evolving society. AAM invited a group from INHABIT, i.e.: Associate Mr Halie ZHAN, Computational Design Lead Mr. Ho Sung KIM and Senior Sustainability Consultant Mr Leo LI, to give the Webinar “Exploring the Impact of Façade Design and Engineering on Reducing Embodied and Operational Carbon”. They presented on how façade design and engineering can contribute to reducing operational and embodied carbon. They demonstrated opportunities to reduce carbon during stages of planning, design, construction, and maintenance with showcases of examples from project references.

The “Architectural doors, Windows and Curtain Wall Design and Application Course” jointly organized by the Labor Affairs Bureau, the Macao Society of Metal Structures and the Architects Association of Macao, and guided by the China Construction Metal Structure Association took place at Seac Pai Van Professional Training Centre of the Labor Affairs Bureau. Representing AAM, BD President Ar. Christine CHOI attended the opening ceremony. Macao is located in a geographical environment of high temperature, humidity and high corrosion, coupled with the increasingly frequent strong typhoons in recent years, especially the impact of Hato and Mangkhut on aluminum windows and curtain walls, the course focuses on the specifications, design, construction and testing of doors, windows and curtain walls in Macao. The course conducts an in-depth discussion on the development status and problems of the aluminum windows and curtain walls, and strengthen the industry’s work on the typhoon-proof design and safety protection of aluminum windows and curtain walls. The course had seven lectures and a total of 18 hours. A number of relevant industry experts from the Mainland were invited as guest speakers, as well as MSMS DB President HO Chi Kin and AAM BD Vice-President Ar. Donna WU served as the hosts. A total of 32 Macao residents signed up for the course. Participants who complete the course and pass the assessment will receive a training certificate jointly issued by the organizer and an attendance certificate issued by the China Construction Metal Structure Association.
