2026 Macao Heritage Building Guided Tour

Organised by the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and funded by the Cultural Development Fund, the “2026 Macao Heritage Building Guided Tour” series aims to open the AAM’s headquarter at Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva No 24A-26 to the public, allowing citizens and tourists to experience the unique charm of this heritage building, while fostering a community cultural atmosphere and establishing the venue as an important hub for cultural and artistic promotion.

The series has invited heritage architecture experts including Ar. LUI Chak Keong and Ar. André RITCHIE to lead the tours. Each session covers historical background introduction, guided tour, and an interactive segment. AAM BD President Donna WU and Director Jason NG have also attended multiple sessions, engaging and sharing with participants.

Since the successful inaugural tour on May 26, the series has held 5 sessions to date, with 80 participants, and the response has been consistently encouraging. Participants have generally given high praise to the activity. They noted that the expert-led tours allow them to appreciate this historic building from a fresh perspective. Many had passed by this building in daily life without noticing its details. The tours have also deepened their understanding and recognition of Macao’s architectural heritage. Many participants have expressed eagerness for future sessions and indicated their willingness to recommend the tours to friends and family.

The 2026 “Macao Architecture Awards”, organized by the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and sponsored by the Macao Foundation, successfully completed its judging process.

The Jury Panel comprised Ar. CHAN Keng Sun, Acting Head of the Architectural Design Division of the Public Works Bureau; Ar. CHAN Chi Lek, Architect of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Ar. HO Kin Wai, Honorary Secretary of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Mr. TAI Hoi Meng, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Macao Association of Building Contractors and Developers; and Ar. HO Pui Kei, Vice President of the AAM Board of Directors. Based on criteria such as design creativity, functionality, sustainable development, cultural value, and contribution to the urban environment, the Jury Panel conducted a rigorous and professional evaluation and selected the winning projects across three categories from numerous entries. The Macao Architecture Awards aim to promote the development of the local architectural profession, recognize outstanding works and professional achievements in architectural design, built environment and professional practice, and raise public awareness of architectural culture and urban environment.

Also organizing and attending this judging session were AAM BD President WU Kin Kam, Director TONG Man Kit, and Director Substitute LEI Chi Ian.

The Macao Architecture Awards aim to promote the development of the local architectural profession, recognize outstanding works and professional achievements in architectural design, built environment and professional practice, and raise public awareness of architectural culture and urban environment. The final list of award recipients will be officially announced and presented at the “World Architecture Day Celebration and Macao Architecture Awards Presentation Ceremony” to be held in October 2026.

The colloquium on the Macao SAR Government’s 2027 Action Plan - exclusive session for expert groups and professional sectors - was held at the Government Headquarters. Mr SAM Hou Fai, Chief Executive, listened to the opinions and suggestions of the delegates on the preparation of next year’s Policy Address. The Architects Association of Macau was represented by President of the General Assembly LEONG Chon In Ben and President of the Board of Directors WU Kim Kam Donna. At the meeting, they spoke and submitted written suggestions regarding the 2027 Policy Address and the recently announced “Third Five-Year Plan”.

In response to the Macao SAR Government’s public consultation on the draft amendments to the “Macao SAR Master Plan (2020-2040)”, the Architects Association of Macau held a workshop at its headquarters. A dozen of board directors, supervisors, and members engaged in lively discussions and shared their opinions on the relevant issues. The relevant opinions were compiled by the Board of Directors and submitted in writing to the Land and Public Works Bureau.

The first amendment draft of the “Macao Special Administrative Region Urban Master Plan (2020–2040)” held a dedicated consultation session for community associations, attended by nearly 100 representatives from over a dozen associations. Representatives from the inter-departmental government committee were present to listen to opinions, and participants actively offered suggestions on various topics, including industrial diversification, urban renewal, Macao-Hengqin integration, regional transport connectivity, ecological conservation, and the development of coastal green corridors.

Ar. LEONG Chong In Ben, President of the General Assembly of the Architects Association of Macau (AAM), attended and spoke on behalf of the Association. AAM highly values this amendment to the Master Plan and recognises its significant guiding importance for Macao’s future urban development, while also putting forward professional opinions on a number of issues.

Ben LEONG pointed out that the International Comprehensive Tourism and Culture Zone currently only includes two large-scale venues in its plan, with clearly insufficient supporting facilities. He suggested adding hotels, commercial spaces, dining establishments, and small-scale performing arts venues to form a complete functional cluster. Considering that Macao’s urban fabric is predominantly composed of small and medium-sized buildings, AAM advocates a cluster-style dispersed layout to avoid constructing single giant buildings, thereby allowing more local architects and small-to-medium enterprises to participate in project development. Furthermore, AAM believes that the building density in Zones A and D is excessively high, while the plot ratios in Zones B and C are relatively low, and recommends that the authorities reassess the development intensity across all zones. AAM also proposes positioning Zone A as the city’s eastern gateway, developing it into a landmark cultural-tourism-commercial complex to promote balanced and sustainable urban development in Macao.

Prof. WU Jiang, President of the Architects Regional Council of Asia (ARCASIA), visited the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and was received by AAM President of Board of Directors WU Kim Kam Donna and other members. Attendees included Fellow Members Council President Carlos MARREIROS, Vice President of the General Assembly CHOI Wan Sun Christine, Secretaries of the General Assembly WONG In Nga Carman, Vice Presidents of Board of Directors Nuno SOARES and Jimmy WARDHANA, and Directors SI Kun Hong and ZHENG Jianyi. Both sides exchanged views on regional architectural development trends and professional collaboration, strengthening ties within the Asian architectural community.

The “Annual Summit on Exemplary Landmark Projects and Cutting-Edge Technology”, co-hosted by the Macau Construction Industry Association and the Construction Industry Association of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, was held at the Macao Science Centre Conference Hall. The summit focused on nationally representative landmark engineering cases, combined with the latest applications and development trends of cutting-edge technologies in architecture, engineering management, smart construction, green low-carbon practices, and digital transformation, exploring the direction of transformation and development opportunities for Macao’s construction industry in the context of the new era. Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and nationally renowned survey and design masters were invited as keynote speakers, attracting nearly 200 industry representatives to participate. Ar. LEONG Chong In Ben, President of the General Assembly of the Architects Association of Macau, attended as an officiating guest and engaged in exchanges with experts and scholars.

Both sides shared information on international architectural trends and cutting-edge technologies, promoting exchanges and professional development between the two organizations.

The “ Opening Ceremony of Macao Exhibition of Entry Works of the 2nd Architectural Design Competition of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin” was held at the headquarter of the Architects Association of Macau (AAM). The competition was organized by the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau (UPCB) of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and undertaken by AAM, with the aim of invigorating the architectural design atmosphere in the Hengqin-Macao region, encouraging Macao architects to unleash their creativity, and injecting new ideas into the urban development of the Cooperation Zone.

The officiating guests at the opening ceremony included: CHEONG In Fong, Deputy Division Head of UPCB; WU Chou Kit, President of the Macau Institution of Engineers; SIO Dong Man, President of the Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association; TANG Hon Cheong, President of the General Assembly of the Macau Construction Association; MOK Chi Wai, President of the Macao Association of Building Contractors and Developers; LEONG Chong In Ben, AAM President of General Assembly and WU Kim Kam Donna, AAM President of Board of Directors.

The exhibition showcased multiple award-winning and competing works, covering both professional and student categories. The design sites focused on the lagoon ecological conservation area in southern Hengqin, where participants employed innovative approaches to integrate ecological protection with architectural aesthetics, demonstrating the design wisdom of Hengqin and Macao.

To further optimize urban construction and public leisure spaces in Macao, the Urban Construction Subcommittee of the Consultative Committee on Municipal Affairs visited the Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group to conduct in-depth exchanges on topics related to the planning and design of public spaces and community inclusiveness. The Architects Association of Macau was represented by its President of the Board of Directors Donna WU, and Vice President of the Board of Directors Jimmy WARDHANA, who participated in the discussions. From a design professional’s perspective, they explored issues such as the rationality of public space layout, facility safety, barrier-free access, and family-friendly amenities.

To further enhance members’ awareness of national security and deepen their understanding of the holistic approach to national security, the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) organized a visit to the “National Security Education Exhibition 2026”, hosted by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR. The delegation included President of Fellow Members Council Carlos MARREIROS, GA President LEONG Chong In Ben, GA Vice President CHOI Wan Sun Christine, BD President WU Kim Kam Donna, BD Vice President Jimmy WARDHANA, and a number of executive committee members. This year’s exhibition, themed “Coordinating Development and Security to Safeguard the New Journey of the 15th Five-Year Plan”, featured a prologue and five thematic sections. Through graphic display panels, multimedia interactive installations, and real-life case studies, the exhibition provided a comprehensive overview of key areas within the national security system. AAM will continue to promote the alignment of the industry with national development strategies, closely follow the 15th Five-Year Plan, and contribute professional strength to safeguarding national security and ensuring the steady and long-term implementation of “one country, two systems”.

To strengthen industry exchange and learn about advanced water treatment technologies in neighboring regions, the Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (“Six Associations”), in collaboration with the Macao Water Supply Company Limited (SAAM), organized a delegation of over 40 people to conduct the “Non-conventional Water Resources Study Tour 2026”. The tour focused on the latest developments in Hong Kong regarding wastewater reclamation, greywater treatment, and seawater desalination, aiming to provide members with highly valuable technical references and an industry exchange platform.

The delegation’s first stop was the Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment Works in Sheung Shui, where the facility demonstrated in detail the sophisticated process of converting domestic sewage into reclaimed water, serving as an important model for promoting water resource recycling. Subsequently, the delegation visited the greywater system at the Anderson Road Quarry site, gaining in-depth understanding of how large-scale development areas collect miscellaneous domestic wastewater from buildings and treat it for non-potable uses, showcasing an innovative model that integrates urban planning with water resource management. In the afternoon, the delegation visited the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant. As a strategic facility for addressing climate change and ensuring stable water supply, its advanced reverse osmosis technology and large-scale operational experience provided members with a deeper understanding of the technologies for “developing new water sources.”

The study tour to Hong Kong was coordinated and arranged by the SAAM’s Deputy General Managers, CHU Wai Man and LEI Chi Tou, who liaised with the Hong Kong Water Supplies Department and the Drainage Services Department. The Secretary for Transport and Public Works, TAM Wai Man, graced the occasion, with the Director of the Public Construction Bureau, Mr. LAM Wai Hou, presenting the recommendation certificates to the eligible trainees. This meeting primarily discussed the preparatory matters for the International Congress of Architects in Barcelona, as well as focused on regional architectural development and cooperation.

The Architects Association of Macau was represented by General Assembly President LEONG Chong In Ben and Vice President CHOI Wan Sun Christine, who put forward comments to support the growth of Macao and the industry.

The China Academy of Building Research and Housing and Construction Bureau of Nanshan District hosted jointly the “Digital Intelligence Facilitating Innovation and Advancement on Construction Technology Across the Greater Bay Area” Forum in Shenzhen. The forum focused on digital empowerment in urban construction, systematically showcased relevant innovative practices and scientific and technological achievements, consolidated industry wisdom, and jointly promoted industrial upgrading and high-quality urban development. Architects Association of Macau BD president Donna WU, Vice President Jimmy WARDHANA, and Director Bruce WONG attended the forum, and witnessed the official unveiling of the Greater Bay Area Headquarters of the China Academy of Building Research.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (Six Associations) organised a sharing session on the spirit of the Fourth Session of the 14th NPC and the Fourth Session of the 14th CPPCC. CHUI Sai Peng José, Deputy to the National People’s Congress and MOK Chi Wai, Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference were invited to be keynote speakers. The session was moderated by WU Chou Kit, President of the Macau Institution of Engineers (AEM). Attendees included LEONG Chong In Ben, President of the General Assembly of the Architects Association of Macau; CHUM Pak Tak, President of the Board of Directors of the Macao Association of Building Contractors and Developers; NG Ka Man, Vice President of AEM Board of Directors; Fernando TSE, President of the Board of Directors of Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies; LO Chi Cheong, President of the Board of Directors of the Macau Construction Association; SIO Dong Man, President of the Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association; along with other leading figures and industry representatives.

José CHUI stated that this year’s Two Sessions was a conference that focused on building consensus, getting things done, and forging ahead in unity, laying a solid foundation for a good start to the “15th Five-Year Plan”. He particularly emphasized that Macao has multiple advantages in culture, science and technology, and opening up to the outside world, which can contribute irreplaceable strength to integrating into and serving the country’s high-quality development goals. He also mentioned that during the Two Sessions, he submitted relevant suggestions on promoting the connection between Macao’s engineering industry and Hengqin’s business, and encouraged Macao’s industry to take the initiative to participate in the integration of Hengqin and Macao, and to give full play to its strengths in building the world-class city cluster of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

MOK Chi Wai said that during the Two Sessions, central leaders repeatedly gave important instructions on Macao’s development on many occasions, pointing out the direction for us. He also pointed out that the construction and engineering industry should seize opportunities and focus on three core tasks: first, consolidating the foundation for development through “industrial upgrading”; second, safeguarding people’s livelihoods with a “people-oriented” approach; and third, anchoring the dual-carbon goals through “green transformation”. He urged to transform the spirit of the Two Sessions into practical actions to promote Macao’s development, achieve better development of Macao in the process of integrating into the overall development of the country, and ensure that the practice of “one country, two systems” in Macao goes far and steady.

To advance the implementation of the “Architect Responsibility System” and establish a regularized mechanism for policy dialogue on this subject, a delegation from the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of the Guangdong–Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, led by Deputy Division Head CHEONG In Fong, visited the Architects Association of Macau. GA Vice-President Christine CHOI and others warmly received them. The two sides held in-depth discussions and exchanged views on the formation of a dedicated task force for the “Architect Responsibility System”.

To enhance residents’ travel convenience and promote sustainable urban development, the Macao SAR Government has placed high priority on and actively advanced the research on the future development strategy of the Macao Light Rail Transit, while conducting public consultations to refine the planning proposals. Government departments from construction held consultation sessions for the professional sector on the development strategy of the Macao Light Rail Transit. On behalf of the Architects Association of Macau, BD President WU Kim Kam and Director SI Kun Hong attended and expressed their opinions.

The Architects Association of Macau held its 2025 Annual General Meeting at its new location at No. 24A-26 Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva. The meeting was hosted by the President of the General Assembly, Ar. LEONG Chong In Ben. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the Macau Holy House of Mercy for their support regarding AAM’s relocation. He stated that AAM would leverage the advantages of the new central location to organize more activities aimed at enhancing participation among local residents and the public. Following this, Ar. CHOI Wan Sun Christine, President of the Board of Directors, presented the annual work report on behalf of the Board, while Ar. CHEUNG Hau Kuen Mimi presented the annual financial report. Christine Choi reviewed AAM’s development over the past year. She highlighted that AAM had organized multiple lectures and seminars for industry professionals. In terms of international engagement, AAM participated in the 21st Asian Congress of Architects (ARCASIA) held in South Korea. Additionally, to promote and support local architects, AAM organized architectural design competitions and exhibitions. In community outreach, it continued initiatives such as the “Go to School” program, assisting young people in expanding their creative horizons and paving the way for building a better community. Subsequently, Ar. WONG Yue Kai Eddie, President of the Supervisory Board, delivered a report on behalf of the board, and the annual work and financial reports of the Board of Directors were approved.

The meeting then proceeded with the election of the new Organ for the upcoming term. With unanimous approval from members, Ar. LEONG Chon In Ben was re-elected as President of the General Assembly for the 2026–2027 term. Architects Carlos MARREIROS, WONG Chong Un Jonnathan, and CHOI Wan Sun Christine were elected as Vice Presidents. Ar. WU Kim Kam Donna was elected as the new President of the Board of Directors, with Architects HO Pui Kei Jay, LAI Kun Fong Manuel, Nuno SOARES, LAI Kuong Hou Ryan, and Jimmy WARDHANA serving as Vice Presidents. Ar. WONG Yue Kai Eddie was re-elected as President of the Supervisory Board, with Ar. CHEANG Kun Wai Paulo as Vice President. Ar. Carlos MARREIROS was appointed as President of the Fellow Members Council. The meeting concluded with self-introductions by the newly elected Council members and a brief overview of the 2026 work plan and direction by the newly elected President of Board of Directors, Ar. Donna Wu, as well as a group photo of all attendees.

The “2025 Macao Project Management Awards Ceremony” was held at the Macao Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre. Organised by the Macao Project Management Professionals Association, Macau Construction Safety Association and Association of Building Engineers of Macau, the Awards serve as an important platform recognising outstanding achievement and advancing professional excellence within Macao’s construction and engineering sectors. The organizing committee has selected 20 outstanding award-winning projects, including small-medium-scale repair and renovation works, and large-scale projects such as healthcare complexes, public housing, and light rail systems. On behalf of the Architects Association of Macau, BD Vice President Manuel LAI was invited to serve as the award presenter.

The DSOP recently met with representatives of the “Six Associations” of the Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group to hold a meeting regarding the improvement plan for the public works tendering system. During the meeting, attendees exchanged views on the proposed revisions to the public tender documents, with a focus on enhancing fire safety and scaffolding safety management, as well as the scoring criteria for the proportion of local employees hired. The representatives also provided suggestions regarding the establishment of a database for engineering consultancy bids.

The 3rd Conference of Overseas Chinese Supporting the High-Quality Development of the Belt and Road, co-hosted by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and the Macao Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese took place in Macao. The event brought together nearly a thousand participants, including overseas Chinese leaders and youth representatives from over 80 countries and regions, as well as members from various sectors of Macao society. AAM President of General Assembly Ar.LEONG Chong In and President of AAM Board of Director AAM GA President Ar. LEONG Chong In and BD President Ar. CHOI Wan Sun was invited to attend the opening ceremony. The AAM board members and supervisors also attended to support the event.

“AAM Architectural Design Exhibition & Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards Exhibition” took place at Rua de Pedro Nolaso da Silva no.24A-26. The “AAM Architectural Design Exhibition” aims to establish a platform for cultural exchange in architectural design, recognizing outstanding works by local architects and continuously advancing architectural technology and vision. The “Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards Exhibition” showcased award-winning entries from the 2024 competition organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and co-organized by AAM fostering creative exchange and dialogue in architectural design across the two sides of the strait and beyond.

22nd – 23rd November, 2025

The “Design Charrette (2025): Heritage in Macao” was organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) and co-organized by the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) . The event focused on three key themes: exploring Macao’s UNESCO World Heritage architecture, learning about cultural heritage, and participating in an architectural design workshop. On the first day, through a walking-tour led by professors from the University of Saint Joseph in Macao, participants visited Macao’s World Heritage sites, where they closely observed architectural details and learned about their historical backgrounds. Participants examined heritage sites like the Ruins of St. Paul’s College, Na Tcha Temple, Old City Walls, company of Jesus Square and Mount Fortress, gaining an in-depth understanding of their cultural significance. They also compared these sites with historical buildings in Hong Kong, exploring how cultural heritage preservation can be integrated with innovative design. After the tour, participants visited the University of Saint Joseph and had group discussions with volunteer architects. Participants drew inspiration from cultural heritage to create innovative architectural design models in preparation for the following day’s workshop. On the second day, participants completed their design models and took part in a design competition, contending for various awards. The event concluded with an awards ceremony and closing ceremony. The Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards are organized by Autodesk annually to celebrate building industry professionals and educators who are helping to drive the transformation of the building industry through the usage of building information modelling (BIM), and who help shape the industry to evolve to a more efficient and sustainable era. The Architectures Association of Macau (AAM) was invited to be a supporting organization of BIM Awards 2025. AAM BD director Ar. Ryan LEONG attended the relevant activities.

The 2025 Architectural Society of China Annual Conference was held in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. The theme of the annual conference was “Urban Renewal ·Value Reconstruction”. The president of AAM Board of Director Ar. Christine CHOI, and Vice President Ar. Donna Wu were invited to attend the conference. Together with experts and scholars from the architecture field across the country, they discussed topics such as industry transformation and upgrading, urban renewal, design value reconstruction, and digital technology empowerment, aiming to promote the integration of urban and rural areas and coordinated regional development.

The “Seminar on the Overview of the Recent Development of Quantity Surveying in Macao” organized by the Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), was held at Macao Chamber of Commerce Ho Yin Memorial Hall. Professional experts were invited to deliver lectures, introducing industry development trends and providing a platform for participants to exchange insights on quantity surveying, thereby fostering the cultivation of related professional technicians in Macao.

The 5th Asia Pacific Intelligent Green Building Alliance Conference aims to promote academic, technological, and practical exchanges and cooperation in the intelligence and greening of buildings across the Asia-Pacific region. The “2nd Forum of Portuguese Speaking Engineers”, jointly organized by the Macau Institute of Engineers and the Low Carbon Green Hotel Development Alliance, was successfully held at MGM COTAI. Centered around the theme of “Building a Sustainable Future through Green and Eco-Friendly Development,” the forum brought together nearly 80 engineering experts from Portugal, Mainland China, Macao, and Hong Kong for in-depth discussions across a diverse range of topics. The forum explored several key areas, including water security, environmental architecture, agricultural innovation, and large-scale infrastructure. AAM BD Vice-President Ar.Nuno SOARES shared insights on integrating sustainability into architectural design, emphasizing balance of natural resources and urban development.

The “Academic Forum on Geospatial Technology Empowering the Conservation and Inheritance of Cultural Heritage” was successfully held in Macao and Zhuhai from September 4 to 7, 2025. The forum was jointly organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology and the Key Scientific Research Base of National Cultural Heritage Administration (Tsinghua University). It brought together experts and scholars from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao. AAM GA President LEONG Chon In Ben was invited to attend the forum. This forum focused on core topics such as the digital preservation of cultural heritage, the intelligent preservation of historical towns and villages, spatial information technology in heritage condition assessment, and the construction of digital twin platforms for heritage conservation. Twelve thematic academic reports were presented. Considering the 20th anniversary of Macao’s Historic Centre’s UNESCO World Heritage inscription, the forum organized participants to visit its iconic heritage sites. such as the Mandarin’s House, the Ruins of St. Paul’s College and so on, learning from Macao’s experience in protecting “living heritage”. Subsequently, some participants traveled to the Zhuhai Institute of Urban Planning & Design, where they visited the Zhuhai Planning Science and Technology Innovation Center. This academic seminar and field visit between Macao and Zhuhai not only deepened the consensus on the application of spatial information technology and emerging AI technology in the field of cultural heritage, but also built a valuable platform for exchange between the protection of historical heritage and the construction of modern cities, jointly contributing wisdom and strength to the building of a culturally strong nation.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) - Architects Association of Macau(AAM), The Macau Institution of Engineers (AEM), Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies(AECEM), Macao Association Building Contractors and Developers(MABCD), Macau Construction Association(MAC), Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association(APMCCM) - held the “2024 Macau Quantity Surveying Technician Practice Recommendation Certificate Conferment Ceremony and Dinner” at the Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Center. The event celebrated and acknowledged the successful emergence of a new cohort of professionals. That evening, the Secretary for Transport and Public Works of Macau, TAM Vai Man attended the ceremony in person, demonstrating the government’s emphasis on industry talent development. Witnessed by the attendees, the President of the Public Works Bureau (DSOP), LAM Wai Hou, presented the Practice Recommendation Certificates to the trainees who had successfully completed their studies, marking their official acquisition of the industry-recognized professional qualification. Since 2020, the Six Associations has continuously organized the “Macau Quantity Surveying Technician” course, aiming to provide upskilling pathways for industry practitioners and help them seize broader career development opportunities. There were 38 eligible trainees enrolled in this course. After systematic learning and rigorous assessment, 25 trainees passed successfully and were awarded the Practice Recommendation Certificates.

The “Little Silver Ball Welcomes National Games & May Fourth Youth Table Tennis Team Invitational”, jointly organized by the Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau and the Youth Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau, took place successfully at the Macao East Asian Games Dome. The Architects Association of Macau was honored to participate as an invited guest team in this annual sporting event. The competition this year attracted 24 teams from various sectors across Macao, with nearly 200 young athletes showcasing their skills. The AAM, while not reaching the podium, demonstrated spirited teamwork and contributed to fostering cross-industry camaraderie through sports.

In order to further enhance members’ awareness of national security and deepen their understanding of the holistic approach to national security, the Architects Association of Macau organized a visit for its members to the “2025 Exhibition for National Security Education”. The exhibition was hosted by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau. Participants included the President of the General Assembly, LEONG Chong In; the President of the Board of Directors, CHOI Wan Sun; Vice President WU Kim Kam; and other board members. The event aimed to explore the close relationship between national security and urban development from the perspective of the architectural profession, fulfilling the industry’s social responsibilities. Under the theme of “Balancing Development and Security,” the exhibition provided a comprehensive overview of the 16 key areas covered by the national security system through graphics, multimedia interactions, and case studies. The representatives from the association focused on topics closely related to the architectural industry, such as “resource security,” “ecological security,” and “urban resilience building.” They also engaged in discussions on how to integrate national security concepts into Macao’s urban planning. The Architects Association of Macau will continue to promote the alignment of the industry with national development strategies, contributing professional expertise to safeguarding national security and ensuring the steady and long-term success of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

The Macao SAR Government hosted the 2025 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2025MIECF), a three-day event, at Cotai Expo, The Venetian Macao. To thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the National “Two Sessions”, the Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM), a meeting to convey the spirit of the “Two Sessions” (the Third Session of the 14th National People’s Congress and the Third Session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in 2025) was held at the premises of the Macau Construction and Property Development Chamber of Commerce. The event invited deputy to the National People’s Congress Mr. CHUI Sai Peng and the CPPCC National Committee Mr. MOK Chi Wai as keynote speakers, with Mr. LEONG Chong In, a member of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, serving as the moderator. Attendees included leaders and industry representatives such as Ms. CHOI Wan Sun, President of the Board of Directors of the Architects Association of Macau; Mr. CHUM Pak Tak, President of the Board of the Macao Association Building Contractors and Developers; Mr. WU Chou Kit, President of the Macau Institution of Engineers; Mr. CHAN Mun Fong, Director of the Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies; Mr. LO Kai Jone, Honorary President of the Macau Construction Association; and Mr. XIAO Dongwen, President of the Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies.

The two keynote speakers stated that this year requires the high-quality completion of the goals set out in the 14th Five-Year Plan, laying a solid foundation for a strong start to the 15th Five-Year Plan. It also marks the beginning of the second phase of development goals for the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. They encouraged all colleagues attending the sharing session to deeply understand the General Secretary XI Jinping’s call for Macao to further enhance its “international influence” and urged everyone to contribute to promoting the integrated development of Hengqin and Macao and to better integrate Macao into the nation’s overall development strategy!

Through this meeting to convey the spirit of the “Two Sessions,” the construction industry can accurately understand major national policies and their significance for Macao’s future development.

The Architects Association of Macau held its 2024 Annual General Assembly at the Macau Red Cross. The meeting was chaired by GA President Arch. LEONG Chong In, who delivered the opening speech. He began by expressing gratitude to the Macau Red Cross for providing the venue and shared his hope that the AAM’s new headquarters would be operational by 2025. Regarding the future direction of the association, President LEONG emphasized that AAM would continue to collaborate with the new Chief Executive and the government to advance the development of the construction industry, particularly in areas such as employment and working conditions. He also mentioned that nearly 20 Macao architects participated in the “ Guangdong- Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin Architectural Design Competition “, organized by the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of the Guangdong- Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and co-organized by AAM. He expressed his hope for more such opportunities in the future.

Following this, BD President Arch. CHOI Wan Sun presented the annual work report, while Arch. CHEUNG Hau Kuen delivered the annual financial report on behalf of the Board of Directors. In her report, President CHOI highlighted the association’s achievements over the past year. AAM actively participated in activities organized by the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA), the International Union of Architects (UIA), the International Committee of Portuguese-Speaking Architects (CIALP), the Architectural Society of China (ASC), and the World Association of Chinese Architects (WACA), with an increasing number of Macao architects representing the region. AAM partnered with universities in Macao and mainland China to host its first-ever academic exchange camp for architecture students in Macao in 2024, introducing them to the city’s heritage and modern architecture. By the way, she thanked Macau University of Science and Technology for providing the venue to support the exchange camp, even the successful hosting of a series of activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR, as well as to commemorate World Architecture Day.

Arch. WONG Yue Kai, the President of the Supervisory Board, reviewed the annual work and financial reports, commending the Board for their dedication and efforts over the past year. All attending members unanimously approved both reports. The meeting concluded with a speech by Arch. Carlos MARREIROS, President of the Fellow Members Council, who expressed his appreciation for the association’s outstanding performance and hard work over the past year, which laid a solid foundation for the years ahead. He encouraged everyone to unite and face future challenges together, striving to achieve the shared vision and mission of the association.

Being invited, GA President LEONG Chong In and BD President CHOI Wan Sun from the Architects Association of Macau, attended the second meeting in 2024 of the 12th “Customer Liaison Group” of Macao Water. The meeting provided updates on the company’s sustainable development efforts and discussed the status of aging buildings in Macao and the ensuing need for the maintenance of service connections in these buildings. Representatives from the Marine and Water Bureau also summarized the outcomes of the “Consumption of Safe Water Scheme for Buildings”.

The event aimed to enrich the cultural and recreational activities within Macao’s construction industry and enhance friendship. AAM proudly secured third place in the competition.

The GA President of the Architects Association of Macau, LEONG Chong In, along with BD Vice President WU Kim Kam, BD Director WONG Chan Wan, and Supervisor TOU Kit Wan, attended the “2024 China Architecture Society Annual Conference” held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. The theme of this year’s conference was “Building a Sustainable Future”. The event brought together over 1,200 architects from across the nation, including Macao and Hong Kong. Among the participants were 17 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as more than 200 distinguished guests who delivered academic presentations. The conference featured 26 academic activities, including keynote speeches, academician salons, thematic forums, and roundtable discussions, all aimed at exploring new concepts, mechanisms, and models for urban and rural development, and jointly envisioning a sustainable future. The AAM delegation took this opportunity to strengthen exchanges with architectural societies from mainland China and Hong Kong, participate in high-level academic discussions, and stay updated on the latest industry and academic developments. They also forged new friendships with peers from various provinces and cities, making the trip a highly rewarding experience.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: Architects Association of Macau (AAM), The Macau Institution of Engineers (AEM), Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies (AECEM), Macao Association Building Contractors and Developers (MABCD), Macau Construction Association (MAC), Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association (APMCCM)) held a “Celebration Event to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region”.

The event was attended by Engineer Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, the then Secretariat for Transport and Public Works; MA Chi Ngai, Chairman of the Macao Chamber of Commerce; LAM Kam Seng, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Macau Urban Renewal Limited, and several other government officials.

MOK Chi Wai, MABCD President, delivered a speech on behalf of the Six Associations. He highlighted that over the past 12 years, to meet the industry’s demand for surveying expertise, the fifth Macao Quantity Surveying Technician Course will be held. He expressed gratitude to the Public Works Bureau and senior industry leaders for serving as guest speakers. In 2024, for the first time, the Six Association organized an inspection tour outside the province (to Guizhou), where members were deeply impressed by the nation’s construction achievements. Additionally, the Six Association remain committed to supporting professionals and workers of construction industry, offering assistance and care whenever they face challenges. He also thanked all the guests for their presence. 

During the banquet, leaders of the Six Association conducted a toast ceremony. WONG Yue Kai, President of Supervisor Board of AAM, delivered a toast, wishing the nation’s prosperity and Macao’s industries flourishing growth.

The jury panel which was composed of 7 people, namely: Choi Ieng Va, Department Head from Public Works Bureau; Chan Chi Lek, architect, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Benny Chan, President of Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Chum Pak Tak, MABCD BD President; Zheng Jian Yi, Associate Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and Technology; Filipe Afonso, Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Architectural Studies of University of Saint Joseph; and Donna WU, AAM BD Vice-President, carried out the review session to select the projects of “Macao Architecture Awards 2024”.

In view of the weakening of the relationship between “Macao Architecture Awards” and the “ARCASIA Awards for Architecture”, the regulations of “Macao Architecture Awards 2024” have removed the requirement that architecture must be completed at least two years, to attract more works to participate. The jury adopted a rigorous attitude and selected two Gold Award works and three Excellence Award works, among the twelve entries received.

As the Architects Association of Macao organized members to conduct a two-day in-depth study trip in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The main purpose of the trip is to speed up the setting up of a cooperation platform with relevant government agencies and institutions, so that Macao architects can have a clearer and more specific understanding of the development opportunities and directions in GBA, as well as a deeper understanding of major landmark building projects in GBA.

The program of the study trip included visits to the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Guangdong Province and the Shenzhen Survey and Design Industry Association for exchanges and meetings, as well as an inspection of a number of famous architectures in Shenzhen. The members of the study group included GA President Ben Leong, BD President Christine Choi, BD Vice-Presidents Donna WU and Manuel LAI, BD Directors Mimi Cheung, Jimmy Wardhana, Ryan Lai, Vincent Hong, Nick Chan, Bruce Wong and Ives MA, Fellow Members Bruno Soares and Irena Ó, and etc.

The Architects Association of Macao was invited to attend the review meeting of the Guangdong Association of Construction Technology and Standardization Standard - “Guidelines for Architect Responsibility System” (Draft for Review) held in Guangzhou. On behalf of AAM, GA President Ar. Ben LEONG and BD President Ar. Christine CHOI attended the meeting.

The “Guidelines” is co-edited by the Shenzhen Association of Registered Architects and the Guangdong Association of Registered Architects, and invites participation from relevant government departments in Shenzhen, relevant architectural design companies in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Architects Association of Macao, etc.

A review expert group composed of 7 masters and experts of the industry from the Mainland, together with the Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Shenzhen Futian District Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, 2 editor-in-chief units, and 17 participating units, a total of 50 people attended this “Guidelines” review meeting. The “Guidelines for Architect Responsibility System” (Draft for Review) was unanimously adopted.

The “Guidelines” is in line with the actual situation of Guangdong Province, has guiding significance in promoting the high-quality development of construction in Guangdong, and provide technical support and operational basis for the promotion of the architect responsibility system there. It systematically clarifies the responsibilities, rights, rewards and service scope of the architect responsibility system, proposing reference standards for charging fees.

We believe that national security is the most important cornerstone of national development, the most fundamental guarantee of people’s well-being, and the prerequisite for Macao’s prosperity and stability. Maintaining national security is everyone’s responsibility and responsibility. The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), organized “Guizhou Inspection and Exchange Delegation of Macao Construction Industry”, to visit the Guizhou Provincial Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and large-scale construction projects to learn about the latest developments and construction technology achievements of the country. Being led Mr. MOK Chi Wai, MABCD BD President, the delegation was composed by more than 30 people, including an inviting guest from Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao; AAM BD Vice-President Ar. Donna WU, BD Directors Ar. Gor SI and Ar. Bruce WONG, and Director of Supervisory Board Ar. Karen Tou, participated.

During the five-day trip, the delegation visited the Guizhou Geological Museum, Guizhou Provincial Museum, Liyang Aviation Town, Baling River Bridge and Museum, Pingtang Bridge, FAST Science Popularization and Education Base, etc., and benefited a lot. Due to the complex terrain in Guizhou, the “bridge-to-tunnel ratio” of road construction is very high, making it extremely difficult. With continuous technological advancement and years of hard work, super bridges have been built one after another, connecting Guizhou to development “highways” and greatly improving people’s livelihood. The relevant advanced bridge construction technology can serve as a reference for Macao. In addition, through visits to large-scale construction projects such as the “Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope”, the members of delegation can learn about the latest development of the science and technology of the country and broaden their horizons.

At the invitation of Lek Hang Group, a group of 18 people from the Architects Association of Macao went to the LHG headquarters office for a courtesy visit. Mr. SIO Cong Meng, the chairman of the LHG, personally received and presented to the AAM’s colleagues the project of Hotel Central that is about to resume operations.

Hotel Central, located on Almeida Rebeiro Aveneu, was built in 1928. After two expansions, it was once the tallest building in Macao. It was the flagship of the Macao gambling industry and one of the most luxurious hotels at that time, receiving many celebrities and VIPs. It was also a famous place for festive banquets of local people. Times have changed, and with the shift in the focus of Macao’s commercial and gambling industries, the hotel has gradually declined since the 1980s. Mr. SIO, who was born and raised in the core urban area of ​​Almeida Rebeiro Aveneu, is deeply concerned about the revitalization and development of the area that is also the Historic Centre of Macao. He purchased Hotel Central and was determined to restore the hotel to its former glory, undertaking structural restoration, reinforcement and interior renovation works that lasted over three years.

Combined with the on-site visit to Hotel Central, Mr. SIO shared his experience in the renovation project. In particular, he pointed out how to find ways to supplement the pile foundation for the hotel while ensuring structural stability, restore the material and appearance of the original facade, and even use new materials to reproduce the stair handrails with artistic features. Through the interior decoration that reflects the hotel’s past glory days, and the catering that provides Macao’s traditional nostalgic dishes, it is run as a boutique hotel to attract guests. In addition, a historical display gallery will be set up to allow citizens and tourists to understand the development of the hotel and the Historic Centre of Macao.

AAM Open House

The Architects Association of Macau held an open day for members at its Headquarters at Avenida do Coronel Mesquita No.2F, Macau. The activities included lectures, photography exhibition, visits and exchanges. More than 40 members, friends and students from architecture faculties participated, making the event lively.

The event was kicked off by the welcome speech of Arch. Christine Choi, President of AAM Board of Directors. Then, BD Vice-President Arch. Nuno Soares introduced the exhibition “AAM Headquarters – Av. do Coronel Mesquita 2F: A Sentimental Photographic Journey” and led the attendees on a guided tour of the venue. Bruce Wong received them warmly. 

First, the host and guest held a meeting, with the attendance of Arch. Rui Leão, Secretary-General of the International Union of Architects, at AAM Headquarters. Arch. Ben Leong delivered the welcome speech. Then Arch. Christine Choi and Arch. Rui Leão introduced the AAM 2024/2025 work plan and the UIA work prospects respectively. Two main issues, i.e. the election of ARCASIA Chairman and the preparation for the 2029 World Congress of Architects, were discussed and exchanged opinions on the meeting. AAM will fully support ASC in nominating representative to run for the chairmanship of the ARCASIA Chairman and Beijing’s bid to host the World Congress of Architects 2029.

At noon on the same day, AAM hosted a lunch in honor of the ASC delegation. In the afternoon, AAM accompanied the delegation to visit Rua da Felicidade, São Lazaro area and other historical districts. Coinciding with the Lantern Festival, the delegation also participated in the “Celebration Chinese New Year of Dragon & Lantern Festival” and visited the exhibitions of arts held at Albergue SCM.

The delegation deeply felt that their visit to Macau was fruitful.

Representatives of the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) visited the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone and were received by Director Cheong Kok Kei, Deputy Director Li Zhiping and department heads. Representatives of the six associations included: GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi from AAM; BD President Mok Chi Wai and BD Vice-President Vong Kock Kei from MABCD; President Eddie Joe Wu and BD President Edison Lai from AEM; BD Vice-President Fernando Tse from AECEM; BD Vice-President Harry Lai from MCA; Vice-President Long U Hong and Secretary-General Pun Chi Keong from APMCCM; and others.

The UPC Bureau explained to the Six Associations about the management measures for the registration of Hong Kong and Macau professionals and companies in the field of construction and related engineering consultant in Hengqing, consulting the opinions of the Macau industry on the formulation of legal content. The Macau industry concerned about how to develop in Hengqin, the relevant regulations, opening-up measures and arrangements in the construction field, and the bidding process.

In order to prepare for the relocation work, a batch of printed materials, magazines, books and other materials collected over the years were sorted out. Considering that the relevant materials and information can reflect the development status of Macau and neighboring regions over the years, and will be of interest or value to the public or relevant researchers, AAM opened to the public for selection by their interests.

At the same time, in order to support the architectural design professional courses in Macau higher education, assist the career development of secondary school students, and cultivate local talents, AAM donated to the University of St. Joseph, Macau University of Science and Technology and Generations International School a batch of books, magazines and other print materials, including professional architectural design books and periodicals in Macau and neighboring regions, as well as a series of architectural magazines published by AAM for more than 20 years.

With the support of the ARCASIA, the Architectural Society China, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and the Architects Association of Macau and in cooperation with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Shenzhen University, the “Asian Contemporary Architecture Seminar” – “Asian Architecture” Series Forum 2 was held simultaneously online and on site at Benyuan Design and Research Center of Shenzhen University. Architect Nuno Soares, Vice-President of AAM Board of Directors, attended and served as the forum’s guest speaker.

AAM general assembly 2023 took place at its Headquarters. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting and delivered a speech. Describing the current difficulties encountered by the Macao architectural industry and its future development prospects, he encourages members to face it positively. BD President Christine Choi made an annual report on behalf of the board of directors. The association held many lectures and seminars for the industry in the past year; In terms of international exchanges, it participated in the 43rd Asian Architects Congress held in the Philippines and the 28th World Congress of Architects and 29th UIA Member Congress held in Copenhagen, Denmark; In terms of promoting and supporting the local architects, architectural design competitions and exhibitions were organized; In terms of community, the community project named “Go To School” were continuously carried out. Board director Mimi Cheong presented the financial report. The annual activity report and financial report introduced were passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report. 

The association also made the election of the new council for 2024-2025. By the unanimous approval of the members presented, Arch. Ben Leong continues to be the GA President while Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. Johnathan Wong being the GA Vice-Presidents; Arch. Christine Choi is re-elected as BD President while Arch. Eddie Wong continues to be the President of Supervisory Board; Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. José Maneiras continue to be the President and Vice-President of Fellow Members Council.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference on the work report at the Headquarters of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers. Representatives of the six associations included: Eng. Eddie Joe Wu, President of the Macau Institute of Engineers; Arch. Christine Choi, BD President of the Architects Association of Macau; Eng. Leong Chi Hang, BD President of Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies; Eng. Vong Kock Kei, BD Vice-President of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers; Mr. Lo Chi Hou, BD Vice-President of Macau Construction Association; and Mr. Pun Chi Keong, Secretary- General of Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association.

This work report mainly revealed that public works were still needed to support the survival and development of the industry in the next two to three years; the finalization of “Approval and Inspection Guidelines or Standards for Public Housing Projects” needed to be realistic; and the rate of serious injuries related to construction works has decreased in recent years. The Six Associations was planning to submit a writen opinion on the “Approval and Inspection Standards for Government Public Housing” to the Office of the Secretary for Transport and Public Works of the Macau SAR Government in December.

The award ceremony of “Open Call for Design Proposal for Public Art Installations and Public Facilities at Lai Chi Wun Shipyards Plots X11 - X15”  took place at the “Cultural Heritage Protection Act Promotion Carnival” held in the garden at Nos.5 to 7, Rua de Sanches de Miranda. The award presenters included Ms. Leong Wai Man, Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Ms. Linda Wong, Vice-President for the Public Relations of Galaxy Entertainment Group; and Arch. Christine Choi, President of AAM Board of Directors. The design competition was organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, coordinated by the Architects Association of Macau, and supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group.

The list of winners: Gold Prize – Chao U Cheng; Silver Prize - Zheng Jianyi; Bronze Prize - Ngan Kin Wa. Three Honorable Mentions: Team of Ma Chi Fai and Ng Hang U; Team of Kong Ka Cheng and Fan In Kuan; and Team of Lin Zhihang and Hon Kit I.

The winning projects were exhibited at the event and the winners made introductions to the guests.

A delegation of nearly 20 people from the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) went to Guangzhou to visit the Guangzhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Fei Chunyan, Division Chief of the Social Work Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, was invited to serve as the Consultant of the delegation. The delegation was cordially received by Chief Engineer Tang Yixing of the Guangzhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The two sides exchanged views on the implementation of the “Guangzhou Nansha General Plan for Comprehensive Cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau” and the needs and directions of cooperation between Guangzhou and Macau in the field of construction works. Representatives from the District Bureaus of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Nansha and Huangpu, Guangzhou Construction Industry Federation, Guangzhou Engineering Survey and Design Industry Association and others also joined the meeting.

AAM “2023 World Architecture Day Celebration and Young Architects Design Competition Award Ceremony” took place at Oasis of Galaxy Hotel. A total of more than 80 members, guests and friends participated, and the scene was lively.First, GA President Arch. Christine Choi delivered a speech introducing the association’s work this year. Then the result of “2023 Young Architects Competition - Pavilions as Urban Place-Maker” was announced and the award ceremony was held. The Architects Association of Macau held a seven-day “2023 AAM Architecture Design Exhibition” at Albergue SCM, and the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was presided over by AAM GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi. Honorable guests Yang Yi, Devision Head at Department of Economic Affairs at Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR; Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau; Cheang Kai Meng, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Deputy Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Hoi Kam Un, Department Head from Cultural Development Fund; Wong Pit Wa, Division Head from Municipal Affairs Bureau; as well as the representatives from those associations of Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group were invited to open the exhibition together. AAM then awarded certificates to seven local secondary school students who completed the “Architect Professional Shadowing Program” this year.In addition to the latest design projects of AAM’s members, the exhibits at this architectural exhibition also include the entries of the “2023 Young Architects Architectural Design Competition” and the award-winning works of past young architects design competitions. It was also arranged for the participants of the 2023 Young Architects Architectural Design Competition to introduce their entries to the guests. The exhibition was sponsored by the Macau Cultural Fund.

A group of 13 people from the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), visited the Macau Chamber of Commerce and received a warm reception from the President Chui Sai Cheong and Vice President of the Board of the Directors U Kin Cho.

Representative of the Sixth Associations successively communicated and exchanged opinions with the representatives of MCC on issues of concern to the industry, such as training of construction professionals, urban renewal, optimizing the bidding system for public works, improving construction technology, strengthening cooperation with foreign engineers, etc..

Arch. Eddie Wong, Supervisory Board President of the Architects Association of Macau, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the Six Associations. Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau, was invited to present practice recommendations to qualified trainees. As distinguished guests, Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works; Lai Weng Leong, Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Tam Wai Man, Director of Environmental Protection Bureau; Lam Hin San, Director of Transport Bureau; Pun Wa Kin, Director of Civil Aviation Authority; Lau Wai Meng, Director of Macau Post and Telecommunications Bureau; Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos, Director of Housing Bureau; Vicente Luís Gracias, Director of Cartography and Cadastre Bureau and so on.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group started in 2020 to organize a quantity surveying training course based on Decree No. 74/99/M. It has been held for three times so far, and a total of 95 people with certain qualifications have been trained, providing a certain number of talents in the field of quantity surveying in Macau.

The Architects Association of Macau is honored to invite Professor Wang Shu, Department Chair of the Architecture Department of the China Academy of Art, famous Architect and Pulitzer Prize winner; and his wife Lu Wenyu, partner of the Architect Firm to come to the association for a visit. AAM President of Fellow Members Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros, GA President Arch. Ben Leong, BD President Arch. Christine Choi, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and etc. received them warmly and had an exchange meeting together. At the meeting, Prof. Wang shared his experience in architectural design and practice for many years. The participants were inspired and benefited a lot. On the same day, AAM organized a group of 25 members to attend the lecture “When Architecture Meets Nature - Aesthetics of Chinese Architecture”, given by Prof. Wang at the Macau Cultural Center to further understand his philosophy and persistence in design. To further promote exchanges with mainland and foreign architectural industries and expand the vision and level of local architects, AAM is planning to organize an architecture tour to Shanghai in the second half of this year and visit Prof. Wang Shu. It is also hoped to promote local architectural design through the visit.

The annual activity report and financial report introduced by the Board of Directors was passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report. Arch. Carlos Marreiros, President of the Fellow Members Council also presented in the Assembly. Amendments to the Constitution were also introduced at the General Assembly and passed unanimously. This revision of the Constitution is to rationalize and expand the number of members in each committee within the existing organizational structure in response to the development of affairs of the association and the actual situation in Macau. In addition, Arch. Ben Leong and Arch. Johnathan Wong were approved to be the AAM fellow members, due to their contribution to the Association and Macau for many years.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM) held a press conference at the premise of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers. President of the Board of Directors Arch. Christine Choi represented the Architects Association of Macau to attend. The press conference introduced the impact of the COVID19 epidemic on the construction industry at the end of 2022, as well as called on government projects to appropriately extend the construction period as appropriate, so that other private projects could follow this practice. It is hoped that the end of the epidemic and the opening of the market could attract foreign investment and stimulate the private construction market.

“AAM 2022 Architecture Exhibition and Prize Presentation of Macau Architecture Awards” took place at Albergue SCM. Honourable guests Leong Iok Sam, Director of Fire Services Bureau; Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Deputy Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Lao Cho Un, Deputy Director of Sport Bureau; Lam Wai Ip, Division Head of Cultural Affairs Bureau; and Wong Pit Wa, Division Head of Municipal Affairs Bureau were invited to present awards to the winners of the competition. Wong Chio In, Division Head of Education and Youth Development Bureau and AAM BD President Ar. Christine Choi presented certificates of appreciation to the jury members. A group of members, guests and friends attended, making the event joyful and lively. The Macau Architecture Awards (MMA) is a bi-year event, includes three categories: Residential Projects, Public Amenity Buildings and Conservation Projects. The jury section of the Awards had completed on 27th August, 2022. The jury panel was composed of: Ar. Choi Ieng Va, Department Head from Public Works Bureau; Ar. Chan Chi Lek from Cultural Affairs Bureau; MABCD BD President Mr. Mok Chi Wai; Ar. Zheng Jianyi, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of the Macau University of Science and Technology; and AAM GA President Ar. Ben Leong. Winner of the Gold Award in the category of Public Amenity Buildings was the “Athletes Training and Development Centre” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited and its another project “Nursing College” won the Honourable Mention. In the Conservation Projects category, “The Extension of Pousada de Sao Tiago” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited won the Gold Award, while “Belive & More” of A Design Architecture Limited won the Honourable Mention. As for the category of Residential Projects, there were two Honourable Mentions, e.g.: “Mount Park” of A Design Architecture Limited; “Waterfront Duet” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited and P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd. Macau Branch. Ar. Ben Leong and Ar. Christine Choi delivered the opening speech and officially kicked off the event. After the Awards Presentation Ceremony, the representatives of the awarded architectural firms guided the guests to visit the exhibition and introduced their projects. Being invited by Cultural Affairs Bureau, Dr. Jixiang Shan, former Director of the Palace Museum, came Macau to give the public lecture “Power of the Culture – Assign Vitalities to the Resources of Cultural Heritage”. Dr. Shan explained the cultural relics of the Forbidden City and their connection with daily life. AAM organized 15 members to attend.

Organised by Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) - the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) and co-organised by the Architects Association of Macau, the “18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – Collateral Event from Macau, China”, the result of Open Call for Exhibition Proposals was announced. It will feature a team composed of Jimmy Wardhana, Choi Wan Sun, Lin Ian Neng and Tong Tou U, in the Biennale in Venice, Italy, in May 2023. The collateral event, themed “RE-CALIBRATION – In Search of a New Critical Regionalism”, aims at exploring the urban and architectural development of Macau.Founded in 1980, the “International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia” is one of the most important architectural events today. It has been the fourth time that IC has organised the participation of Macau’s architectural sector and related practitioners under the name of “Macau, China” since 2014. In order to encourage architectural talent in Macau to make breakthrough innovations and to increase exchanges between the industry in Macau and their international peers, the Organiser held the “18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – Collateral Event from Macau, China” Open Call for Exhibition Proposals. The Jury Committee was composed of the President of IC, Deland Leong Wai Man and four experienced architects from Hong Kong and Macau, including the former President of the World Association of Chinese Architects, Eddie Wong Yue Kai; the President of the AAM Fellow Members Council, Carlos Marreiros; the Director of the Macau Urban Renewal Limited, Johnathan C. Y. Wong; and the Founder of Atelier Global Limited, Frankie Lui, who reviewed in two rigorous evaluation of the nine participating proposals. The proposal “RE-CALIBRATION – In Search of a New Critical Regionalism” by Jimmy Wardhana was awarded the Gold Prize, the proposal “Bamborella” by Alexandre Leong Marreiros was awarded the Silver Prize, and the proposal “Earth Life: Separation and Convergence” by Sou Un Teng was awarded the Bronze Prize. No proposals were awarded the merit awards.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM) hosted “Seminar on the Development of Quantity Surveying in Macau and the Integration with the Greater Bay Area and International Certification” at Mr. Ho In Memorial Hall of the Macau Chamber of Commerce. AAM GA President Arch. Ben Leong attended the event. This seminar is the first lesson of the third “Macau Quantity Surveying Technician Course”. The jury panel which was composed of 5 persons, namely: Choi Ieng Va, Department Head from Public Works Bureau; Chan Chi Lek, architect, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; MABCD BD President Mok Chi Wai, Zheng Jian Yi, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and Technology; and Ar. Ben Leong, AAM GA President, carried out the review session to select the projects of “2022 Macao Architecture Awards”. Among the six entries received, two Gold Awards and four Awards of Excellence were selected.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), was invited by Office of the Secretary for Transport and Public Works and Public Works Bureau, to visit the template of common pipeline ducts and the construction site of the Fourth Macau - Taipa Sea Bridge at the new urban Zone A. AAM President of the Members Assembly Ar. Ben Leong, Vice-President Ar. Johnathan Wong, President of the Board of Directors Ar. Christine Choi, Vice-Presidents Ar. Paulo Cheang and Ar. Donna Wu, etc. joined into the visit. According to the introduction of Sam Weng Chon, the Subdirector of Public Works Bureau, an annular common pipeline duct which will be divided into two types: double-cabin type and single-cabin type, will be laid under the main road in Zone A. There are special openings to allow access for maintenance to avoid repeated excavation of the road surface. Micro-common ducts will be laid under footpaths. Communication cables and power supply cables, etc. are placed in the common pipeline ducts, except for gas pipes, rainwater pipes and sewage pipes.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference at the premise of Macao Association of Building Constructors and Developers. AEM GA President Eddie Joe Wu, AAM BD President Christine Choi, MCA BD President Lo Chi Cheong, MABCD BD Vice-President Vong Kock Kei, AECEM GA Vice-President Fernando Tse and APMCCM Supervisory Board President Long U Hong represented to preside at the conference.
At first, a report with 3 issues was introduced: 1) participation in public affairs initiatives such as the revision of relevant regulations; 2) technical training courses; 3) Industrial Accident Support Fund. Among them, the Fund has distributed, since 2019, one-off support donations to the families of nine victims of industrial accidents. The start-up fund in 2018 was 1.2 million patacas, and the current rollover balance is more than 600,000 patacas.
Additionally, the Six Associations pointed out that the construction industry in Macao has at least 20 years of sustainable and stable development with the construction of the Macao new reclaimed urban zone and the ICZ and the cooperation between GBA. There is still a need for engineers, architects, construction technicians, all kinds of craftsmen. Therefore, the industry accesses into schools from time to time, to promote and encourage students to study engineering. The purpose is to hope that more local people will be engaged in the construction industry.

AAM general assembly 2021 took place at its premises. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting. The annual activity report and financial report introduced by the Board of Directors was passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report.
The association also made the election of the new council for 2021-2023. By the unanimous approval of the members presented, Arch. Ben Leong continues to be the GA President while Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. Johnathan Wong being the GA Vice-Presidents; Arch. Christine Choi is re-elected as BD President while Arch. Paulo Cheang, Arch. Jay Ho and Arch. Donna Wu being BD Vice-Presidents; Arch. Eddie Wong and Arch. Harry Mok are the President and Vice-President of Supervisory Board; Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. José Maneiras continue to be the President and Vice-President of Fellow Members Council.
Christine Choi, BD President for the new term, first thanked the members for their trust and support. Then she introduced the work plan for 2022 on behalf of the board. The board will continue the purpose of the association, focusing on the rights and interests of members, and strengthen communication and cooperation with all parties based on the principle of “professional sustainable development”, to open up more development opportunities for members and the industry. President of Fellow Members Council Carlos Marreiros also delivered a speech at the meeting, encouraging members to actively serve the society.

AAM hosted the series of celebration for the “2021 World Architecture Day”, including seminar of CPD, exhibition, prize presentation of Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects and dinner party, at Oasis of Galaxy Hotel. More than 100 members, guests and friends participated.
AAM BD President Christine Choi delivered a welcome speech. First of all, she thanked the team of directors and supervisors for their active efforts in the past year, and the support of members, the government and different organizations to the association. Summarizing the 2021 works of the association, despite the COVID 19 epidemic, thirteen online and offline seminars, as well as various architectural competitions and exhibitions were successfully held.
The results of “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus” - Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects was announced and the awards ceremony took place at the same event that evening. Honourable guests Leong Iok Sam, Director of Fire Services Bureau; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Luís Manuel Silva Madeira de Carvalho, Deputy Coordinator of Infrastructure Development Office; and Arch. Eddie Wong, AAM Supervisory Board President were invited to present awards to the winners of the competition. AAM President of Fellows Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros and President of General Assembly Arch. Ben Leong presented certificates of appreciation to the jury members and to the rest of teams which participated into the competition.
Other VIPs including: Cheang Kuan Hoi, Division Head of Institute of Municipal Affairs; Wong Chio In, Division Head of Education and Youth Development Bureau; the jury of the competition and the representatives of the associations of the industry attended the event.

In order to promote the mutual integration of urban planning and construction between Zhuhai and Macao under the framework of the GBA, and strengthen the cooperation between the construction industries of the two places, a delegation of Zhuhai Institute of Urban Planning and Design led by Vice-President Chen Sining, visited AAM. AAM President of General Assembly Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board Arch. Christine Choi, Vice-President Arch. Jay Ho, board members Arch. Mimi Cheung and Arch. Jimmy Wardhana received them warmly. The current situation about the professional practice in different places was discussed during the meeting. It gives a reference to Macao architects how to participate into the works in Zhuhai and GBA. AAM also suggested that some small-scale projects should be used as pilot ones to give Macao architects the opportunity to participate in the design works in Zhuhai.
The Zhuhai delegation also included Chief Architect Chen Wei, Chief Engineer Office Director Yang Jiong, Vice Chief Engineer Lin Yaozong, Vice Chief Architect Ji Peidong and Li Li, Assistant of the Director, accomplishing with Zheng Jian Yi, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and technology.

A number of representatives of the Architects Association of Macao participated in various activities of the 19th Asian Conference of Architects of the ARCASIA through online. This conference was jointly hosted by the Chinese Society of Architects and Tongji University. It was originally scheduled to be held in Shanghai in 2020, but was postponed for one year due to the COVID 19. The conference was changed to an online mode to allow architects and industry professionals from all over Asia to participate. The five-day conference included a number of activities such as the ARCASIA Council meeting, academic conferences and student Jamboree.
The academic conference with the theme of “Sharing & Regeneration” was chaired by Professor Wu Jiang, ARCASIA Vice Chairman and former Executive Vice President of Tongji University, and delivered an opening welcome speech. A number of well-known architects and scholars from China, ARCASIA regions and the United States were invited as keynote speakers. In addition to the keynote presentations, a number of breakout workshops were organized.
Representing AAM, GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi attended the Council Meeting and presented the AAM’s activity report, introducing the difficulties and countermeasures encountered by Macao under the epidemic.
In the student Jamboree this year, AAM invited nine tutors and students from the architecture related faculty of University of Saint Joseph and Macao University of Science and Technology to participate, to allow local students to contact and communicate with the ones of foreign architecture schools, so as to enhance the international perspective and level of local architecture students.

The opening of the exhibition of AAM Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects 2021 took place at Macao Science Centre. Chaired by AAM Supervisory Board President Eddie Wong, Fellow Council President Carlos Marreiros, GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi, honourable guests namely: Lam Wai Hou, Coordinator of Infrastructure Development Office; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Cheong Hong Fat, Deputy Director of Macao Science Centre; as well as the representatives of the Construction Industry Development Concern Group were invited to unveil the event. Attending guests also included representatives of the associations of the industry, representatives of the university’s architecture-related faculties and AAM members.
In order to activate the atmosphere of the architectural design in Macao, AAM organizes an architectural design competition for young architects every two years. The theme of the competition 2021 is “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus”. A commercial area site in District A of the new urban reclamation integrated with the Creative Gateway Park is selected as the site for the competition. The workplace campus planning shall demonstrate the design of a synergetic environment to allow different government entities and department to collaborate, with appropriate proportion of private and segregated space. The purpose of the competition is to select a reasonable, creative, and artistic entry that reflects the reimagination of future workplace and provide food for thought to the possibility of a vertical workplace campus in Macao.
A total of eight entries were received for the competition. In addition to meeting the established functional requirements, some of the works also considered different aspects such as location feature, urban landscape, environmental protection, energy saving, and response to the epidemic, providing many practical design ideas and showing the extraordinary creativity of the young architects in Macao.
This exhibition was sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and supported by the Macao Science Centre.

The jury session of “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus” - AAM Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects 2021, was carried out. The competition received overwhelming response, with a total of eight teams submitting entries. With the aim to stimulate the architectural design spirit of Macao, Architects Association of Macao (AAM) continue to organize the architectural design competition for young architects. Briefing session of the 2021 Competition was hosted through online (zoom meeting) and offline (AAM Premise), presided by OC Arch. Jimmy Wardhana and Arch. Jay Ho. With the Macao SAR Government expecting to withdraw from office lease in the next three years saving hundreds of millions in annual rent, there are currently many ongoing developments of government offices. Not only is the construction of new office buildings seen as positive from economical savings point of view, but as young architects we are intrigued to see the possibility reimagining the future workplace of Macau by introducing a vertical workplace campus. Therefore, the theme of the competition this year is “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macau: The Vertical Campus”. The purpose of the competition is to select a reasonable, creative, and artistic entry that reflects the reimagination of future workplace and provide food for thought to the possibility of a vertical workplace campus in Macao. Organized by the Architects Association of Macao and co-organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the opening ceremony of the “Cross-Strait Architectural Design Exhibition” was held in the lobby exhibition hall of the Macao Science Centre. VIP guests: Zuo Xianghua, Deputy Director of the Economic Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Head of Urban Planning Department; Sio Han Pan, Director of Macao Science Centre; representatives of the Macao Construction Industry Concern Group, as well as AAM GA President Ben Leong; GA Vice-President Johnathan Wong; BD President Christine Choi and BD Vice-President Donna Wu presided the ribbon cutting ceremony. Other guests attending the ceremony also included professionals and scholars from associations, institutions on architectural design and construction industries. With the theme “Shape the Shapeless: Cross-Strait Architects and the Architecture of the Belt and Road and Africa”, HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design and Symposium and Awards (CADSA) 2019 launched and completed successfully. Architects from the “Belt and Road” countries and regions interact with architects from Mainland China, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macao. As a co-organizer, the Architects Association of Macao participated actively in the event and exhibited award-winning projects in Macao, to share and learn about outstanding architectural design from various places, and to promote communication with outside professionals. This exhibition exhibited 24 works that won gold, silver, bronze and merit awards in the categories for professionals and for students of the CADSA 2019.

Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and co-organized by the Architects Association of Macao, the “Connectivities: Living Beyond the Boundaries – Macao and the Greater Bay Area, the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia – Works of the Collateral Event of Macao, China”, was inaugurated at the Taipa Houses. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mok Ian Ian, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Yin Rutao, Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Arch. Carlos Marreiros, the curator of the exhibition, President of AAM Fellows Council; and Arch. Ben Leong, AAM GA President. The exhibition featured four exhibits by young local architects and urban planners Ho Ting Fong, Che Chi Hong, Lao Man Si and Chan Ka Tat, which participated in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. The Macao Pavilion at “Biennale” had previously been opened to public since May 22nd this year. Their works interpreted the connection between architecture, reclamation areas, collective memories and urban life from multiple perspectives, presenting the imagination of cross-border life in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to audiences from all over the world, exploring the infinite possibilities of “connection”, to echo the theme “How Will We Live Together?” of the “Biennale”. This is the fourth time for the Cultural Affairs Bureau to organize Macao architects to participate in the world’s premier “International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia” under the name “Macao, China”, and strive to show the creations of Macao architects on the international stage. Carlos Marreiros was invited to serve as the curator of the Macao Pavilion, and lead the team with the four young people mentioned above to participate into “Biennale”. The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia was originally scheduled to be held in 2020. The event is postponed to this year due to the pandemic of the COVID-19.

The Macao Association of Engineers (AEM) was responsible for the coordination and arrangement, and with the assistance of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology (GDAST), a group of 40 people from the Macao Construction Industry Concern Group (MCICG) formed the “Macao Construction Industry Investigation Prefabricated Building Delegation” to go to Guangzhou for related thematic visits and learning (AAM CPD 5/2021), that provided continuous professional development training for the industry to match the Macao SAR Government’s policy of promoting prefabricated construction technology. The delegation visited prefab factories, construction quality and safety inspection centre and had also a meeting with the principals of GDAST. The delegation was coordinated by Eng. Clement Sio, AEM BD President with the participants of the other leaders of MCICG including Arch. Ben Leong, AAM GA President, as well as Government representatives from the Office for the Infra-structures Development and Environmental Protection Bureau, and etc..

MGM Cotai was awarded the highest rating certification – Three-star Green Building Operation Label, issued by the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association. It is currently the only mega complex building and hotel in Macao that gains the Three-star Certification in both Green Building Design and Operation Label. In order to promote the development of green buildings in Macao and the growth of related talents, MGM held the “Seminar on Technology Application and Development of Green Buildings in China and Macao”, at Grand Ballroom on the first floor of MGM Cotai. At the same venue, the Certificate Presentation Ceremony took place. Eng. Chen Guangxian, Deputy General Manager of China Construction Engineering (Macau) Company Limited; and Dr. Edison Zhang, National China Green Building Label (GBL) Assessor from Green Building Research Center of Chinese Society for Urban Studies, were invited to be the speakers. They introduced the technologies and development of green buildings in China and cited the eco-friendly structures of MGM COTAI as a role model. The seminar was concluded with a tour of the hotel, enabling the participants to view its green facilities and technologies. Being one of the co-organizer of the seminar (AAM CPD 2/2021), the Architects Association of Macao organized members, included Carlos Marreiros, President of Fellow Council; Christine Choi, BD President and etc., to participate.

AAM President Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board Arch. Christine Choi and Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu received, at AAM premise, the President of Cultural Affairs Bureau Mok Ian Ian, Vice President Leong Wai Man and Advisors of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Lo Hou Chi and Wong Sai Peng. The main purpose of this meeting was to exchange views on the plan of the new Central Library. IC expected to build a platform for cooperation with the local construction industry on various development plans of the Bureau. AAM expressed the concern of the Association and some members on the overall development of the new Central Library project. AAM also emphasized the need for the government to foster a sustainable environment for local professionals to practice and flourish in order to cultivate local talents and that the local architects and their contributions would be fundamental to the development of Macao. ICM had just announced that the new Central Library will be located in the former Hotel Estoril and exposed four conceptual design plans provided by international architectural design team which invited by ICM.

Huayi Design Consulting Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shenzhen with many branches spreading in China, is registered in Hong Kong. AAM GA President Ben Leong, BD President Christine Choi, BD Vice-Presidents Paulo Cheang and Donna Wu, board members Jimmy Wardhana and Manuel Lam received warmly the delegation of the Industrial and Commercial Association of the Northern Zone of Macao, led by the President Mr. Wong Kin Chong and President of the Board of Directors Mr. Ma Kin Cheong. Views on the urban renewal planning of the Northern District, which have a vision to build a diverse community that is livable, suitable for travel, suitable for business and pleasure, were exchanged during the meeting, with the aim to gather professional opinions from various fields and to advise the Government.

A delegation of Macao University of Science and technology Faculty of Humanities and Arts: Prof. Zhang Zhi Qing, Dean of the Faculty; Program Directors Huang Guang Hui and Zheng Jian Yi, visited AAM. AAM President Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board Arch. Christine Choi, Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu, board members Arch. Mimi Cheung, Arch. Nuno Soares and Arch. Manuel Lam received them warmly. This meeting promoted exchanges and future cooperation between the two sides in various fields such as city planning, urban renewal, architectural design, heritage conservation in Macao.

The theme of workshop on August 22 was “Re-Imagining the Future of Young Architects”.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference at the premise of Macao Association of Building Constructors and Developers. AAM BD President Christine Choi, AEM BD President Clement Sio, AECEM BD President Lei Hei Ip, MABCD Supervisory Board President Tony Lao, MCA Chief Secretary Lo Chi Hou and APMCCM BD President Sio Tong Man represented to preside at the conference. At first the concern group explained the impact of COVID-19 to the industry that lack of personnel and materials supply due to restrictions on the boarder and therefore, suggested the authorities to give priority to local industry to participate in public works and to reduce part of the industry’s taxes and other expenses, in order to reduce the economic burden of the industry during this period. In line with the government’s launch of “Relief for Work”, the six associations and Labour Affairs Bureau jointly organized technical training courses to promote the upward mobility of local workers and cultivate talents. It was also briefed that the leaders of the six associations had a meeting on January 21, with Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works and Chan Pou Ha, Director of Land, Public Works and Transportation Bureau.

With the co-organizer of AAM, The Macao Museum of Arts organized the proposals calling for “The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia –Exhibits from Macao, China”. In order to better promote the architecture of Macao to the international stage and to better fit the theme of the Biennale, finally, based on the opinions of the jury, Carlos Marreiros, a senior architect and famous artist in Macao, was invited to serve as the curator of the Macao Exhibition, and formed a team with four natives young professionals from the construction sector with experience in urban planning, i.e. Ho Teng Fong, Che Chi Hong, Lau Man Si and Chan Ka Tat, who were selected from the participants of the proposals calling. The theme of Macao Exhibition is “How will Macao live in the future: Living beyond the boundaries, Macao, Greater Bay Area”. The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, with the theme “How Will We Live Together?”, is originally scheduled to be held in the summer of 2020. The organizer announced that the event will be postponed for one year due to the pandemic of the COVID-19.

AAM BD President Ar. Christine Choi, BD Vice-President Ar. Jay Ho and board member Ar. Jimmy Wardhana went to the Cantonese Opera Art Museum in Liwan District, Guangzhou to participate in the “Shiwan Ridge Ceramics Skills Workshop”. The workshop was jointly organized by the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, the Institute of Historical Environmental Protection and Renewal of South China University of Technology and the Lingnan Folk Arts Platform of South China Agricultural University, with the support organizations including Hong Kong Historic Building Conservation Association, the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists, Macao Institute for Tourism Studies and the Architects Association of Macao. The one-day workshop was composed of two parts. In the first part, three speakers from SCUT and SCAU, i.e. Xu Zili, Gao Wei and Xiao Lu, introduced the overall process from the planning, design to construction of the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and how the traditional architectural decoration crafts of Southern China such as Shiwan ceramics, grey plastic, stone carving, brick carving, wood carving, Caozhou fragmented ceramics and wood painting, were applied in the project. The learners were guided to visit and appreciate those masterpieces there. In the second part of the workshop, He Zhanchuan, Shiwan pottery art master, Zhongshan inheritors of intangible heritages, who has worked on those ceramics decorations in the museum, presented his knowledge and skill on traditional Shiwan pottery art. The learners had the chance to experience by themselves the simple pottery making process. This workshop is one of the Co-Crafts with Masters workshops series where the Hong Kong Institute of Architects collaborated with HKHBCA, held in various venues in GBA. Co-Crafts with Masters is related to a series of public engagement events called Co-Vitalize Our Heritage, aiming to promote the knowledge about architectural conservation and the traditional building techniques and crafts.

The inauguration of the 8th Shenzhen and Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture 2019 (UABB) and the Macao Exhibition at the same event took place in Shenzhen. Ding Qiang, UABB OC Secretary; Choi Kin Long, Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau Department Head; Yang Jing, Vice-President of Macao Urban Planning Institute; Christine Choi, AAM BD President and Chris Tong, the Curator, President of Planwish Architects and Consultants Co.,Ltd. presented in the opening of the Macao Exhibition. The theme of current UABB is “Urban Interactions”. The event lasts for three months and its main venue is located at Shenzhen Futian Railway Station. Exhibitors from various counties around the world come together and bring works that integrate architecture, art and design and explore in-depth on the phenomenon of linkage and interlocking among cities, between cities and people, and among people in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the process of deepening global interconnection and regional integration. The team of Planwish Architects and Consultants Co.,Ltd., which has won the gold award in the stage of proposals calling organized by ICM, is responsible to curate the Macao Exhibition with “City - Gate” as the design theme. “Gates” which are everywhere in Macao, are used as symbols to construct a parametric-aided 3D-printed installation sculpture composed of arches, the GBA urban context and the grid pattern of WeChat Moments. They symbolize the close connection, mutual influence and coordinated development of Macao and other cities in the GBA in both material and virtual space, reflecting the importance of Macao’s strategic positioning in the development of the GBA. The exhibition aims to arouse people’s thinking and imagination on the preservation of Macao’s local culture in the rapidly increasing urban interaction.

AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM (the Six Associations) jointly held a dinner party at Macao Tower, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s handover. VIPs: Zhu Hong, representative of Liaison Office; Zhu Xi, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works; officers of various Government bureaus, leaders of various associations and etc. attended the dinner. MABCD President Paul Tse delivered a speech on behalf of the 6 associations. AECEM President José Chui delivered a toast and held a toast with the leaders of the 6 associations and the guests. We wish that the Macao SAR will enter a new and glorious chapter under the leadership of the fifth Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and his management team.

With the aim of encourage the development of local young architect and enhancing their creativity on contribution to the rehabilitation of old urban, AAM organized again the architectural design competition for young architect in 2019 with topic of “Rua de Cinco de Outubro Neighborhood Revitalization and Redevelopment Concept Design Competition”. The jury panel was composed of Eng. Ho Man Him, Department Head of Public Roads and Drainage of IAM; Ar. Chan Chi Lek, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mr. Lei Cheok Kuan, President of the Industry and Commerce Federation of Macau Central and Southern District; Ar. Yvonne Ieong, Director of BEAM Society Limited; Ar. Paulo Cheang, Vice-President of AAM Board of Directors. Among the 7 entries, our Jury Panel decided to have one Gold Award, one Silver Award and three Honorable Prizes. This competition got the sponsor of Cultural Affairs Bureau.

A group of 5 representatives from Nam Kwong Natural Gas Company Limited visited AAM, welcome by our GA President Arch. Ben Leong, BD President Arch. Johnathan Wong, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and board member Arch. Ryan Lai. Nam Kwong is the utility company currently providing natural gas for Macao in both public and private sectors. The delegation shared with us knowledge and advantages of natural gas over LPG, as well as future potential of the natural resources in long term which would enlighten us on choice of new energy.

A review sharing session “Vicente Bravo – The Man and the Architect”, organized by Albergue SCM with the co-organizers AAM and CA Cultura, took place at Albergue SCM. The Secretary for the Transport and Public Works Engineer Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, the local architects and engineers attended. Ar. Carlos Marreiros, Ar. Jay Ho, Ar. José Maneiras, Ar. Paulo Cheang, Ar. Maria José Freitas, Ar. Nuno Soares, Eng. José Silveirinha and etc. gave the homage to Vicente Bravo, sharing his life story and the experience on working with him. Vicente Bravo worked in Macao as an architect for over 30 years and contributed to Macao by designing numerous important architecture projects, including the 1991 Macao Architecture Award project the Peony Court of Flower City Taipa, the pavilion provisional of the handover ceremony in 1999, which is widely known as “The Lantern” and etc. His pursuit of architecture is a model for our younger generation. AAM acknowledges Architect Vincente Bravo for his contribution to Macao and to our profession of architecture design. Architect Vicente Bravo passed away in Lisbon on 28th July, 2018, at the age of 72.

Macao Space Development Planning Seminar

Organized by Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST), the “Macao Space Development Planning Seminar” was held on March 8, 2018 at the MUST Library. With the invitation of the organizing unit, Vice Presidents Paulo Cheang and Donna Wu and Director Ryan Lai represented AAM to attend this activity. This seminar is one of the academic exchange activities of the “2018 Joint of Postgraduate of Seven Schools Design Camp: Macao Space Development Planning Seminar Activity”, inviting Huaqiao University Vice President Liu Gong, Professor Zheng Zhi, Qinghua University Professor Xu Mouyan, Japan Institute of Architects President, Waseda University Professor Nobuaki Furuya, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Zhang Lufeng, Chongqing University Professor Deng Suyang, Tunghai University Professor Kuo Chi-Jeng, six well known domestic and overseas experts and scholars from the fields of architecture and city planning; and also inviting guest representatives of related societies and academic institutions from Macao, including Office of Policy Studies of the MSAR Government Prof. Mi Jian, Association for Macao Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection President Cheang Kok Keong, Macao Urban Development Institute President Chan Leong, Macao Association of Architects and Civil Engineers of Huaqiao University President Ao Weng Kong and locals experts, as well as MUST Vice President Dr. Tong Ka Lok, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Arts Prof. Zhang Zhiqing, Vice Dean Prof. Ma Quan, Assistant Dean Samantha Chiang, Prof. Ung Vai Meng, Associate Professor Wen Kuo Hsun, Institute for Social and Cultural Research Director Lin Guangzhi, MUST Alumni Federation representative Lo Cheok Meng and so on. Starting from Macao’s history of urban space development and the planning background of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, exploring Macao urban space features, development ideas of foreign cities’ bay area, this seminar analyses the future of Macao urban space development as well. The main guest speakers, Nobuaki Furuya, Cheang Kok Keong, Lam Kuang Chi and etc. presented their subject reports, then the audiences had a discussion with the guests. AAM Vice President Paulo Cheang and Prof. Nobuaki Furuya carried out a discussion. Paulo Cheang stated, limited by the requirements, the Macao old town areas have rather narrow space and also stand many old architectures, contradiction exists between city development and the conservation of historical town, how to balance between development and conserving is a topic worth to discuss on. Nobuaki Furuya believes that Macao old town areas possesses special cultures and the feature of diversity, both redeveloping or entirely conserving the area may not be suitable, he pointed out that referring to the experience of Tokyo, selecting some places of the old town areas possessing cultural features and expanding and activating it, thereby showing the diversity of Macao and specific special cultural features. In addition, Prof. Liu Gong and Prof. Ung Wai Meng and guests each gave suggestions on how to balance between development and conserving historical town areas, how to conserve Macao culture’s inner strength and spread it through the new urban areas, as well as how to make good use of surrounding sea areas and more. Finally, Prof. Ma Quan gave a brief summary speech to the seminar, proposed the vision of Macao urban space development from an international view, looking forward to Macao’s initiative and advancing the development opportunity of the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” through “Belt and Road Initiative”, becoming the “Maritime City” with most historical heritage.
