AAM organized the Webinar “Modernity Lost In Architecture”, inviting the Executive Chief Architect of Shenzhen Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. and the Council Member of the Architectural Review Branch of the Architectural Society of China Arch. FENG Guochuan to be the speakers. Is modernist architecture in China a spiritual pursuit, an aesthetic choice, or a cover-up? Ar. FENG tries to understand the relationship between the core of modernist architecture (modernity) and modernist architecture. Starting from the evolution of modernist thought and the history of modern architecture, we can reveal the complex entanglement between modernist architectural practice and modernity, and reveal the betrayal and deviation of modernist architecture from modernity. Back to the contemporary architectural practice in China, behind this deviation (cynicism, speculation, hypocrisy, kitsch, etc.), there are more vivid and interesting stories. Perhaps in the current context of China, re-using modernity as a mirror to observe can find some different understandings for ’the architectural practice in China.

The Architects Association of Macau invited Architect SHEN Chi, Principal Architect/Senior Partner of Motai Architecture and Executive Director of the World Chinese Architects Association (WACA), to give a lecture on “The Climate-adapting Forms and Re-Innovation of the Ordinary Projects”, at 6th floor of Block R of Macau University of Science and Technology. Based on Ar. SHEN’s work experience of more than twenty years, he has always emphasized aspects like publicity and ecological nature of design. He recommends an architectural design method from the inside out. We should not be satisfied with the “green” design taking place in “technical decoration”. Instead, we should strive to let the green thinking influence the space and forms of buildings, to create superior architectural quality with low energy consumption, and enhance people’s perceptual experience of the environment. Ar. SHEN calls this the “spatial strategy of green design”, which enables buildings to honestly face the climate and environment, therefore to explore the practice of “Climate-adapting Policy “ in architectural design for the Lingnan region of China. The quality of ordinary and everyday projects forms the foundation of urban living quality; these projects deserve more attention and consideration. From Ar. Shen’s design practices and insights in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, he explored strategies to improve the quality of every mundane project, with focuses on two key issues: climate adaptation and pan-cultural integration.

With an area of 1.38 square kilometers, New Urban Zone A is the largest reclamation area in Macao’s new districts. As a major component of Eastern District-2 (Zona Leste-2) under the Master Plan of the Macao Special Administrative Region (2020-2040), the zone is primarily designated for green or public open spaces and residential use, envisioned as a coastal urban gateway with comprehensive community facilities and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. Its development represents a major transformation in Macao’s cityscape. Given the growing number of completed and upcoming public construction projects in the area, AAM was honored to organize the “Urban Evolution- A Closer Look at Zone A Public Housing Developments” with the strong support of DSOP.
